Mac Software I Use and Abuse

To earn my keep as a professor, I write almost everything in Nisus Writer Pro and edit PDF files with PDFpen Pro. For certain tasks, Excel is very handy, and JEdict is my main Japanese–English reference. For the simple web admin work I do, I rely on Feeder, YummyFTP, BBEdit, and CSSedit. For managing students and grades, EasyGrade Pro has no equal, and its ability to sync with a Palm is peerless; my general purpose database software is iData, although I've also begun using Bookends for research. I dumped Mail.app for GyazMail; I use SpamSieve as well. Finally, for professional—ooh la la—websurfing, I plump for OmniWeb, although I use iCab as well.

Handy Software

One of the handiest programs I have is the freeware Namely: start typing an application's name and it appears. For keeping a diary and managing multiple blogs, MacJournal is outstanding; it even has a Palm conduit. Occasionally I need to view and export WMV files with QuickTime Pro, so Flip4Mac Studio is a must; for making QuickTime multimedia content, I have a copy of LiveStage Pro, no longer in development but still impressive. To burn CDs, I prefer DiscBlaze, but BurnAgain DVD lets me make incremental burns. If you love weather, stick it in your menu with Meteo or go hog wild with Seasonality. GraphicConverter is a fine image editor, but I'm making progress with GIMP. I've acquired both Photoshop and Flash CS3, so my GIMP days might go limp—sorry. I've built this website with ShutterBug.
